EFFECT OF LAWS ON MAIL STEAM LINES. (Received Dec. 14, 11.59 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. Mr Sutherland, presiding at a meeting of the Peninsular and Orient Company, said that owing to the Commonwealth's attitude they might have to consider the matter of abandoning the mail contract and divert their splendid liners now running to Australia to a direct service between Britain, China, and Japan. They would not dream of abandoning the Australian tiade if it were possible to carry it on by means of large cargo vessels going via the Cape and carrying a certain number of passengers at comparatively low rates. There wore Indications of larger trade developing with India, China, Japan, and Australia, although the world's abundant tonnage of ships would perhaps debar the company from anything dike a boom.
