Southland Show.

(Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 18. The Southland Metropolitan A. & P. show opened to-day. The day was not bad, but previous rain and two or three showers from the southeast produced conditions under foot that did not tend to comfort. Exhibits exceed by a hundred those of last year. Cattle (except Ayrshlres) are not numerous, but of the latter there is an exceptionally fine display. Sheep arc of exceedingly even grades, the judges being hold put to it to differentiate between tho prize winners. Cattle and sheep were judgpd to-day. Of the Shortlhoras D. Murray's bull was champion, tho same honour going to G. Andrew's cow Diana—both consistent prize takers. In Herefords J. Holmes' was tho only exhibitor, his bull Mentor being champion. The Polled Angus breed was also very poorly represented, the champion cow being W. i Officer's. Ayrshires were pronounced tho finest collection shown in New | Zealand this year. The veteran W. Raskin was again chief prize taker and secured champion honours for Bahnhouses Prince John (imp.), and a cow. In Border Leicester sheep the best was shown by G. P. Johnston, in English Leicester (champion ram and ewe) W. J. Johnston, Romnoy Marsh (champion ram and ewe) T. L. Barnshill, Lincoln (champion ram and ewe) J. B. Stutton, Shropshire Downs (champion ram and owe) J. S. Gricvs. There was .one entry in Cheviots. The champion ram was shown by Robert Watson, and ewo by T. L. Barnshill.

INVERCARGILL. Dec. 14. After all ''People's Day" turned out perfect for such a function, the sutt's heat being pleasantly tempered by a cool breeze from the Southern Ocean. The show therefore had excellent patronage, the railway returns being the largest, for the day on record. The buck-jumping contestsi were watched' with interest, the implement annexe being deserted while they were in progress. Phc general opinion was that many of the horses had had all. the buck taken out of them by cxhibitions;. Not a single cfceese was shown In the dairy section.
