NOTES BY VEDETTE. Now that the Wanganui meeting is over, the spring fixtures are about half through, and a brief review of form shown may not be out of place. 'J he North Island meetings, which arc wore pai'Lioularly interesting to us, began with tlie Marlon hack meeting. Tliouga the class of hor.ve engaged was only what Might be termed average hack, one or two —notably Delamere, Veneer, and Cairngorm—showed very fair form, Voneer's live furlongs being under the circumstances a good piece of work. At Avondale Marshal Soull's double stands out as a sterling performance, and it looks as, if he may put more to his credit. Kilderkin and Cymbal are evidently the best of the two-year-olds. Sfiabird sfieuld bo a useful sort this season, anil Black ami Gold also over live furlongs. Among the ponies Lucrece may be looked to for funther wins, and Sentinel also showed fair form. At Kangitikei some good racing took place, Matuku and Aura! UH both showing a return to form, which was further uphold at Wanganui. Another revivified one was H'ardwork, who ran second to that consistent mare Lass o' Gowrie in the September Handicap. Although interest in ateeplechasing is practically dead, Moccasin's performances may be notad. Among the hacks Submarine and Mannelia showed good form. At Wanganui it was t'xpci.'lt"! that some light would be thiown on future events by the presence of several Cup candidates. None of them ran very prominently, however, and Halberdier showed signs of unsoundness. On 'Shrapnel's performance ho shjould 'lj<i abaut fit to win the Flying at Wellington. Chivalry is evidently a useful hack, and Armistice, with a light weight, a fairly fast mare. Loch Erne's ability, however, is above the average. Convoy finished well up under 9.6. If he could be got fit and well at the post, there could, I think, belittle doubt about this year's Cup. _ Stewards appear to bo taking a little more interest in the running of some of the ovents. At Avondale and Wanganui inquiries were held into the running of Lucixw and Defoe respectively.
Of Southern candidates tor the Cup Calibre continues to show good form, winning a double at Geraldine in each case with a good wnight up.
The answer to the llnrnott and Grant problem was 1 to 1, Bto 8, and 4 to 7. Profess 0 r Maclnurin has just been putting them up to a method of working out all their odds by mean a of a few simple algebraical formulae, rand nn equation, for which he was awarded a consolation prize of £2 3s.
Straybird, who has won twentysix races in the last nine years, has fallen very seldom ; the only time to my knowledge being when several horses fell immediately in front of him .in the Wellington Steeplechase. Tho two colts (oiA' by Carbine) sent out by Mr E. J. Watt are to be turned out at Lcnglandp for eighteen months. They had a rough passage out. Merri wee's first representative in New Zealand, King llilly, promises well.
The D.J.C. spring meeting takes place on the 12th and 13th inst. Tho following may run well :—Hurdles, The Gucfser ; Toioma Hack, Orichton ; Jlosgiel Handicap, De la Key ; Electric Handicap, I'etrovma ; Hact; Weltor, Havnrre ; October Welter, Brighton. A fair number of horses are engaged at Otiaki on the 12th and 13th inst. 'lllie following may be prominent Te Hiwi Memorial, Cairngorm ; Hurdles, Morelli ; Demonstration, Sea Lion ; Flying, Toimaranffl ; Welter, Hippodrome ; Stewards, Merry 1.41;!.
At Napier Park the following may show up well Hurdles, Aroha; County Ilact, Bandmaster ; Park Stakes, Frieland ; Spring Welter, Taura ; Ahuriri Hack, Merry Kate ; Railway, The Stake.
