Waitara Freezing Works
Mr J. C. Maiddjiscm, F.P..1.8.A., the architect for tho new freezing works being erected at Waitara for Messrs Thos. Borthwick and Sons, is at present in New Plymouth in connection with a visit of inspection to tho works.
In conversation with a News representative Mr Maddison said the contractors, Messrs J. and W. Jamieson, of Christehurch, were making good progress with the preliminary work, and expected to have the foundations completed during next week, Tim timber and other materials are coming to hand, and work will be started immediately 0 n the superstructure. It is estimated that the new works will have capacity to deal with tho killing and freezing of 750 sheep and 80 head 0 f cattlo daily, about double tilio operating power of she old plant. The .works have liecn designed on the most modem lines, and plant and equipment of the most up-to-date onder provided for. La-bour-saving appliances will be installed wherever possible, and electric motors wilt be used to a large extent, these being found more efficient and more economical than steam power; and, moreover, they possess advantages in regard to cleanliness and adaptability. Mr Gray, the resident engineer and manager of the works, will have cliargc of this part of the work. The clerk of works representing Mr Maddison is Mr W. A. Gee, while Mr Hamilton acts in ,a similar capacity for the contractors.
That Die new works will, when competed, toe up-to-date may be taken for granted when it is stated that the architect, Mr Maddison, is in request everywhere to carry out such undertakings. Ho is retained by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, for which he has erected the Belfast, Fairfield and Parcbra (Timaru) works, besides several others completed and l n hand in this colony and in Australia.
