Fires.
MASTERTON HOTEL BURNED. (Per Press Association). MASTERTON, July 13. The Queen's Hotel, Queen-street, Mastorton, owned by tho Staples Brewary Company, Wellington, and occupied by J. O'Neill, licensee, was practically gutted by fire at seven o'clock this evening. The outbroak occurred in the upper story, and the flames spread so rapidly that it was impossible to save any of the content!). After the lire had been subdued a man named John Murphy, 41 years, a casual labourer occupying an upper room, was found on tho flooiauffoeated. lie had apparently been lying on his bed, and in making for the door was overcome by smoke. The building was insured in tho Manchester oflico for £BOO, and furniture and stock in the Commercial Union for £Ol5,
NELSON, July 13. A Are occurred to-night in a sixroomed hou.se occupied by Mr T. Gardiner, Tasman-street. A defective chimney caused the lire, which was extinguished before much damage was done.
