DOMINION BUDGET.
♦ CANADA AND PREFERENCE, OTTAWA, June 8. In the Dominion House of Commons, the Hon. W. S. Fielding, Minister for Finance, delivered his Budget speech. He said that both parties in Canada would unitedly support an Imperial preferential tariff, but while the question remained the subject of party controversy iu England it would be improper for Canada to obtrude her views. He did not anticipate an immediate triumph for Mr Chamberlain's policy, but was hoping for its ultimate success. Canada would continue preference, hiut the latter was injuring Canadian industry. The maximum tariff on British woollen goods would be 30 instead of 23 l-3rd per cent, addej. With a view to meeting "dumping" it was proposed to augment the ordinary duty by the difference Between "slaughter" prices and the fair market value in the country of origin. Such addition would not exceed ono-half of the ordinary duty. Mr Foilding referred to signs of depression abroad, whence severe competition was expected. Canada's surplus at the end of June was estimated at £3,300,000.
