Licensing Legerdemain.
(Per Press Association.) UHEYMOUTH, June 1. - When the Licensing Committee assembled to-day Mr Petri a (one of the members) declinod to sit. The reason he gave for this decision in a letter to the chairman was that it had been reported he was interested in one of the applications for a new ' license at the State coalmine. This he absolutely denied, and refused to siit at that meeting. After several applications had been adjourned Mr Joyce, solicitor for the Licensed Victuallers' Association, objected to the bench transacting business, inasmuch as the seat held by Mr Bignell (one of the members, and who was present) had become Vacant by reason ot his having Twbb absent from more than three meet- —\ ings. The bench adjourned to consider the position, and subsequently adjourned till Friday. Other mombers feet that unfair points axe being sprung in regard to Mri Bignell, and it is doubtful if a quorum can be obtained. If not the licenses will apparently lapse at the end of the month.
