A SUSPECTED HOAX.
AUCKLAND, May 80. In a telegram to headquarters at Auckland, Constablo McCarthy, of Kawhia, reports that a man is said to have informed people at Marakopa on Sunday morning that five men had been shot at tho, Mokau River, which is over two days' journey from Kawhia. Nothing has been heard of the affair either at Mokau or To Kuiti. The constable thinks lhe rumour is a hoax, as there arc no houses or camps between Marakopa and Awakiuo.
