OPENING OF QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT. (Received May 17, 10.43 p.m.) BRISBANE, ay 17. Parliament was opened to-day. The Governor's speech congratulated the country on the improved condition of allairs and the prosperous outlook. In order to entourage settlement the Government proposes to construct a number of light railway lines, on the betterment principle ; it also recognises the necessity of encouraging immigration of a suitable class. An Income Bill will be submitted, exempting incomes under £IOO. A referendum is to be taken to decide what number of members shall constitute the House of Assembly. THE FEDERAL CRISIS. (Received May 18, 1.6. a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 17. Messrs Reid and D6akin have adopted provisional arrangements, which will bo submitted to their respective parties to-morrow. If acoepted a joint meeting of parties is likely to be arranged to select a leader. It is stated that the Labour party haß declined to coalesce with Mr lleakin.
