A Long Tunnel.
THE CONTRACTOR HAS HAD ENOUGH OF IT.
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 2. It is understood that Mr A. Ferry, contractor for the tunnel for the Leg stream hydraulic power scheme to supply power for the electric trams has relinquished his contract. The tunnel is to be about 7000 feet in length, and the contract price was £18,830. After twelve months' work Ferry has piereed about 1700 feet, but finds he cannot go on, the country proving much harder than was anticipated. Progress payments have been made of £3,561, and the retention money In the hands of the Council amounts to £llß7. The contractor is liable to forfeit the plant valued at £2OOO. Tke Council will have to decide whether to proceed with the work or abandon the scheme, the total cost of which was estimated by the City engineer at £44,000.
