SPORTING.
STRATFORD RACING' CLUJ3. The Stratford Racing Club commenced its animal meeting yesterday under favourable weather conditions. The club liuh reverted to the two days' racing after several meetings of only a single day, und judging by the success of the lirst day's sport, this is likely to be im annual affair. The course was in capital order, and some good times were recorded, the finishes in many cases being very close. Only one imjuiry was held during (he day, the qucsliou being the riding- of Phillips on Rustique in the Cup—which, by the way, was a. vury interesting race'. Rusiique was leading by a bead when the "mile" post opposite the stand was passed, ami the jockey ceased his exertions here, being under l,hi! impression -that bis task was o'er. The explanation was accepted. Tile principal speculation, of course, was on the Strafford Cup, which is St. Winifred Weill out a strong favourite, Utile Turk being the second fancy, and Unnnnn third. Thu favourite was never seen to any great advantage, the nice resolving itself into a tussle in the straight between Uusti'ipie, Utile Turk, Kanana, and Maureen. Aureole, n line chestnut ■gelding, took charge of his jockey just before tile start for the Cup, and bolted three times round die course at a great rule, living eventually caught, after sundry fruitless attempts, by Messrs Mantell and Mitchell. An unfortunate incident was the accident to Mr Lawless' St. Leo, who broke his leg in the Fanners' Plate. All the arrangements \\\-i'i.' good. Messrs Laugley ltros., of Foxton, served a capital luncheon in the stewards' room, und its excellence was the subject of much comment. The secretary, Mr J. R. Mackay, and his fellow-officials worked hard and methodically throughout the (lay, with conspicuous success. The proceedings were enlivened by the music supplied by the Stratford Municipal Hand, under Bandmaster Lawn. The investments totalled £5837, as against £7331 last year on a peogramnie of eight events. On the lirst seven uvents in 1903 the totalisator returns were £(5170. A good attendance Is expected to-day. The results of the racing were us follows ;
