A Conviction Quashed.
(Pel 1 Press Association.) INVERCAKGILL, Dec. 2. Mr Justice Williams to-day quashed the conviction of George Dempster, a youth of 18, for tralliclehvg in liquor in (top np-licenSe district of Mataura by Mr McCarthy, S.M., who ~ had imposed a fine of £SO. Dempster, the Secretary of a Football Club, was leaving the township, and his successor in office, Spence, asked him to procure some l.'quor for use at a farewell social to him (Dempster), He came to Invercargill and purchased live bottles of spirits, which -he handed to the Secretary ol' the Club. The prosecution had contended that this constituted agency, but his Honor held that it did not, any more than if he asked a friend to buy an article for him and paid Jtini for it-
