The New Trocadero.
In our advertising columns to-day will be found an advertisement from Messrs G. Hale and Co. regarding their new private temperance hotel and restaurant, ■" The Trocadero'," which was recently erected to meet the requirements of New Plymouth and its visitors. The Trocadero possesses a great advantage in being within a minute's walk of the railway station, and this is undoiJbttly convenient to people arriving or departing by trains.i The house has lyeen built to comply with the municipal sanitary and building by-laws, and is thus a most up-to-date establishment in every particular. The building a frolntdilgw to two streets, though Gill Street has not yet been formed by the Borough Bouncil. The Egmont Street frontage is rather imposing, with massive pediment ornamental friezes aind ''balustrade on a spacious balcony, and large windows. The en-trance-hall gives access to the large dining-room, 47ft by 24ft, which deserves special mention. At present ■there is accommodation provided for over 60 guests, but there is ample room for a 'hundred, this number having been in the mind of the architect in drawing the plans. The room is well-lighted and ventilated with windows on two frontages. There is a comfortable little office, and on the opposite side of the hall lavatories, hall-stand, mirrors., etc. A long passage runs the whole length of the lower storey, and from this opens a fine ladies' sitting room, besides a private sitting room and the commercial room and four large bedrooms. A feature of the establishment is the very roomy kitchen, which is built apart from the main building, so as to remove any chance pf the culinary odours which pervade many 1 ouses where the kitchen is under the main roof. An lift Orion range, with three ovens and two fires, ensures the cooking bjsing done properly, and this is under the manajjjmisnt of Mr Mitchell, who was for a long time with Mr Hale in Stratford. The pantry, larder, storeroom and safe are all sweet and clean., and all who know Mrs HWe will agree that this will be true of any house under her management. Passing upstairs, we, find a welllighted and ' spacious landing, from which run two passages. The ladies sittling-room opens on to the balcony, from which can be obtained a splendid view of Mount Egmont on one side and the sea on the other We noticed that on both storeys the ceilings arp very high, and the landings are made to meet the requirements of a three-storeyed building, for which provision has been made in the heavy brick walls, concrete foundations and exceptionally strong timber, used in the first and second flats, the heated weatherboards being 1J inches thick. The two bath-rooms have hot and cold plunge and shower baths, the hot water service being especially good, the lai-ge cistern making it possible to get hot baths up to four hours after the fires have been extinguished. Nothing has been omitted which would make the house popular for visitors or permanent boarders, every detail being attended to. Ample fire escapes have been built, and the building has brick walls. The proprietors have displayed considerable enterprise in building this large and thoroughly up-to-date Trocadero, and we feel sure that Taranaki people and those of the New Plymouth district in particular, will accord them the hearty support which they have so_wefl merited.
