EXPENSIVE SNAGS. PEU PRESS ASSOCUTIOH. Wanganui, October 1. An important judgment affecting shipowners was given by theOhief Jus -, tice in the Supreme Ooir t to-cUy in : the case of Alfred Hawthorne, of Rae-, tihi, storekeeper, against Hatrick and 00., steamboat proprietors The claim was for damage to goods by Witor, caused by the steamer striking a snag in the Wanganui Rivet. The defence was that a boat note had been issued with the condition that owners accepted no responsibility for damage to cargo from water caused by the vessel becoming injured by contact with snagjs etc. His Honor held that as plalnti had received no notice of the conditions of the boat note the shipowners were liable for damage sustained. Judgment was given for £95 and costs. Messrs Chapman and Wray appeared for plaintiff and Mr Fitzherbert for defendant. Execution was stayed for 14 days to admit of an appeal.
