HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS.

Speaking at Stratford, Mr Maxwell is reported to have said—"The Daily News had rtferred to the Timaru harbour as an example of what might be accomplished at New Plymouth. But the conditions at Timaru were entirely different. The water was different and the harbour was locked in with walls. The harbour at New Plymouth was a good little coastal harbour, and they were well served. Why was not New Plymouth honest abeut it? It was preposterous to think of New Plymouth getting a harbour for direot boats." We may say that we have the authority of the Rev. J. N. Buttle for stating that the initial difficulties in making a harbour were greater at Timaru than at New Plymouth and that a heavier sea rolls in there than here, the breakwater there not having the proteotion afforded to the New Plymouth breakwater. The Rev. J. N. Buttle spent many years at Timaru and is surprised, considering the prosperity of Taranaki, its extent and fertility and the exceptional facilities for making a good harbour, to find the port so backward, j Then we have the Engineers' opinions which we value more than we do Mr Maxwell's. The idea that the water at Timaru is different is too absurd. The fact is Mr Maxwell is determined to stop Taranaki having a direct port if lie can, and keep us tied to Wellington if possible. Why Mr Maxwell should fight so hard on behalf of Wellington interests he a'one can say; but we feel sure when the people of Taraniki get ' all the fac's before .them they will go ; for a direct port. This is really the question at issue—a direci port or a coastal harbour.

At a meeting of the Matau branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union the following resolution, in reply to a circular from the Harbour Defence League, was carried: —That this branch is of opinion that the extension of the New Plymouth Harbour to accommodate ocean going vessels is a necessity; and therefore cannot support the proposal to form a branch of the League.
