FOOTBALL.
STAR V. HAWBRA. The above match was played at Stratford on Thursday in the presence of about 2000 spectators. Mr. Spurdle held the whistle, and his decisions gave general satisfaction, Messrs. Proator (Star) and Petty (Hawera) acting as line umpires, The teams were represented as follows: | Star (black): Full, Murphy; f, Calender, Clarke, Carter; g, Allen; Humphries; forwards, Billing, Guorge (wings), Ryan, Smith, Murphy, BulI lock, Allen, Stokes, McDonald.
Hawera (amber and black): Full, Balcher; |, Blythe, Beamish, Greville; g, A. Huntar; J. Hunter; forwards, larkum, Nicholas (wingt-), Wilson, Cooper, Greenbanks, Tocker, Craig, Brown, Douglas.
Wilson (Hawera) set the ball going, Humphries returning into scratch. Star were awarded a free kick, and A. Hunter missing the ball, play waa taken to Hawera 25's, where Star were given another free-kick for off side play. Allen took a shot at goal, the ball falling short. A. Hunter returned into scratch. From the throw-in George acd Smith headed a forward rush, taking th» ball near Hawera line, but Hunter relieved, putting the ball out near the half-way flag, (shortly after Hawera wera awarded a freekick, Wilson making a poor attempt at goal. A scrum was formed near Star line and J. Hunter, getting the ball, dashed over and scored. Wilson's kick did not increase the score. Hawera 3 Btar 0 Stars now livened up, and, Hunter "mulliDg," Allen obtained possession, and after a short run passed to Clarke, who, when collared, sent the ball to Oallendar, and the latter, making a good run, scored in a good position. Allen took the kick, and landed a splendid goal. Star 5 Hawera .. .. ~ 3
On resuming Star continued the attack, but the Hawera forwards, with a good rush, soon transferred play to the black's 25's, where they obtained a free kiok, Murphy forcing. The remainder of the first spell was very even, neither side gaining much advantage, the scores being Star ~ .. ~ 5 Hawera ~ ~ ~ 3 Murphy kicked off in the second spell, Wilson mulling the return, Clarke, followiog op smartly, got pos session and made a good run to the Hawera line, where a scrum was formed, the ball going out, Hawera were awarded a free kick, the ball going out near half-way flag. Stars continued to press the yellows, and from a Scrum Billings passed the ball to Humphries who sent it oa to Allen, and the latter pliyer, making one of [the bes' runs of the day, secured the second try for Stars, and, taking the kick, placed the ball well over the bar. i Hawera now made matters interesting for Star, and a good passing run, in which J. and A. Hunter, Blyth and Beamish took part transferred play close to Star's line, but Humphries relieved by a splendid kick, putting the ball out near half-way, Hawera were not to be denied and again resumed the attack, but tbe defence of tin Blacks was perfect, Clarke eventually relieving by a good kick into scratch. The relief, however, was of. short duration, the Hawera forwards, headed by Wilson and Greenbanks, again rushing the ball on to Star's line where Clarke again saved with a good kick. The yellows continued to press, and J. Hunter, getting tbe ball from a scrum, made a good run, and when tackled passed to his brother, who got over the line but lost the ball, and Beamish falling on it scored. Blyth made a good but unauco9£6ful attempt at goal, From this out Hawera had the best of the game, but Star's defence was too solid and when the whistle sounded the scores were Star ~ ~ .. 10 Hawera .. .. .. 6 For the winners, Humphries, Allen, Olarke, and Callender played splendid games ammgst the bicks, whilst of the foi wards Billing, McDonald, and Ryan were perhaps the most prominent, the former playing an exceptionally good game. Oa the Hawera Bide J. and A. Hunter and Blyth were the piok of the backs; in the forwards Wilson was 1 undoubtedly the best of a good pack, Gr<enbanks and Tocker also putting in good work. FIRST JUNIORS. STAK 11, A V. lUttiPA 11. This match resulted in a win for Star by 10 to nil. [ In the play-off for the Second Junior Championship between Stratford and Hawera, the latter team -won by 8 points to 7. DRIVERS V. DRAPERS. There was a good attendance at this match and great deal of amusement was afforded the spectators. The Mayor kicked off and the Drivers won by 8 to 3, The takiogsamounted to £7 lis6d and as the expenses are only about 25s the i£6 required for rubber tyres to the ambulance litter has been rai-ed. |
