The Patea Chamber of Commerce is asjain moving in the matter of an alteration in (he timetable on the New Ply- j mouth Wanganui section of railway. At a recent meeting one speaker pointed out that all the Clumbers, with probably the exception of Hawera, were dissatisfied with the present arrangements. They should get representations from each of the towns interested. Strattord and New Plymouth had already wrhtsn to the Patea Chamber on this matter. If they could get four or five towns in Taranaki to take joint action in the matter, some thing would be done. After discussion 'it was resolved that this Chamber and others on the coast, and members of the House, be urged to confer as to a revision of the time table to suit the re, quirements of the whole coast, and, if need be, center with the Railway De» partment.

The River Plate Company has deolared a dividend of seven per cent, per annum for the six months ended April 30th. The Minister of Eduoation, replying to the Auckland Board's protest against the observance of Empire Day as a school holiday, pointed out that children were at school to be trained as citizens of the Empire, and that setting aside one day in the manner named did not seem inappropriate. The Board resolved to reply stating the Department was not perhaps aware that on 16 days in the year the Board were instructed to hoist the school flag to remind soholars of their Empire. Mr J. S. 8. Medley, D 0.A., left for Wellington this morning on a business visit. He will be absent for a few days. A public meeting deoided to form a Stratford Fanciers' /' ssooiation. Officers were eleoted, and committee set up, who settled a programme. It was decided to affiliate with the North Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association, and hold a Bhow towards the end of July, if possible. The application for a license at Strathmore having been withdrawn, it is thought the Whangamomona license will be granted Mr G. P. Wake, solicitor, has been ap> pointed Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at Eltham. the position having been rendered vacant by the death of Mr Middleton.

The inquest held at Waitotara on Tuesday upon the body of a woman found last Sunday upon the sea-beach at A'aicotara, failed to disclose the name of • the deceased, or the actual cause of death. '1 he body having been in the water probably for several weeks, no external evidence of drowning could be_ found. There were no marks of violence, no scars, no deformity. The body was well nourished, and iho clothing of unusual good quality. A striking circumstance was the fact of the body being without the outer garments—skirt and bodice. The brooch, fastened at the neck to an inner bodice, has the name (?) " Souitini F." lightly soratched upon the cameo.
