The Daily News. FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1903. THE FARMERS' UNION.

j The meeting of the delegates from the .various Farmers' TJnioas throughout the Provincial District of Taranaki Ivt minds us of the faci that this is an age of Unions. On every side we see various sections tf the community I banded together for profit, protection) or aggression. Where common interest are in danger or to be served, there is no 1 doubt a Union doaa good service. It has long bern a reproach that while some form of union or association has been formed by almost every other trade, occupation, or profession, tha farmers have been disunited, and hava failed to exorcise that influence which the interests at stake demanded, and which their numbers justified. That the interests of the farmers have been so well looked after as they have besn has been dus to the recognition of ths p.inciple that the land and its products are the source of all wealth, and of the nation's progress and prosperity. It has, however, of cen been felt that an organisation, expressing the views and representing the united interests of the farmers as a whole, would be of great i value to the farmers themselves, and to those whose duty it is to legislate for or administer the affairs of the country. What is now known as the Farmers' Union is an effort to provide such.an organisation, and its success depends on those who lead and control it. If is is run on narrow, selfish, parochial lines it is doomed to failure; if, however, it runs on broad national it will prove a blessing to the colony and the members of the Union. Iheir proceedings will be watched with interest, and their short stay in New Plymouth will, we hope, be enjoyable ai.d profitab'e to the members.
