FRIENDLY SOCIETIE3 APPLICATION. The Board resume! consideration of the application of the Friendly Societies for a reduction of charges in respet of treatment of members at the hospitd. Correspondence from other Bjards as to their arrangements with the Societies was rtud, from which it appeared that at Auckland half fees were charged to members and their wives, quarter fees to children under 16, and half fees over that age. The matter wap, however, again under consideration. At Hawke's Bay the membsr of any lodge or one of his family was admitted to the Hospital if the Lodge pud £5. This arrangement was to be in fore i for a year, and seemed to work well. The Wellington Bjard had made do arrangements, but were willing to admit members of Lodges for 10s a week if the Societies' Council guaranteed piyment, or to give the Oouuril the right to send in 25 members free in return for a donation of £SO. Other Boards had made no arrangement with ! the Societies. I

The committee appointed to confer with the Hawera B>ard's delegates with a view to adjusting accounts between the two Boards reported that for the third time thay hid me> the Hawera committee, and after a s'eit deal of deliberation over the Milmoe bequest, which tha Hawera represontatives emphatically r. fused ti o <nsider as an aeset, the position was that lowing out the Mi'moe bequest tin assets were decided thus:—Ne» Plymouth £8650, Hawera £2500; the Hawera committee claiming £IOOO from tha B.iard as their share of assets. The cjaoniittee contended that the Milmoe bequest should be reckoned nn asjet, so 'he matter cams to a dead-lock. Mr Qiilliam, the Board's solicitor, was present, and finally the following agreement was arrived at su'ijioi to confirmation by the Board : AB ! ETJ. Contingent assets: (I) Thi Taranaki Board to retain tha whole of the contingent assets situate! within the boundaries of its present district at time of separation. The Hawera Board to retain the whole of contingent i assets situate within its district at

(5) Oontribu'.ion in due by Hawera J County and subidy thereon, £220 2* BJ, to be treated as in abayince until! proved to bo good, and paid, the. L'aranaki B>ard to pay the Hawera [ Board its proportion according to valu-1 a'ion.

In addition to the Taranaki' Board's rcquirem ;nts for its poor, tbe Home at New Hymouth to be available and us.-d for tbe accommodation of tbe usual class of innutes from the Hawera district ; the Hawera Boird to pay the Taranaki Board the aggregate cost of eaoh inmate who hails from the Hawera district, including present inmates who originally came from within the present Hawera Hospital district bcuudaiies; the Hiwera Boird to make progress payments for suah inmates as from April Ist, 1903, by quarterly instalments at the rate of 10s for each inmate par week; the first of such instalments to be due and p lyabla on June 30tb, 1903, and the final payment to be adjusted at the c'osa of each financial year, when actual cost is ascertained. Such agreement tobe for, say, fivo years. The Ohairmtn s*id that the practical result of the agresment arrived at was that the Taranaki Board kept its reserves and building', and paid the Hawera Boird £85 t of which the Hawera Boird bad to refund £66, the amount of extraordinary expenses incurred by h?m pii)r to 31si March. I He Gray proposed that the report be adopted on the undemanding that chronic cues bo not sent to New PlyJ mouth, as tho Home should not be a 'damping ground for the Hawera chronics. On that unders'anding he ' considered the agreement was an excelI ldn'. one.
Mr Andrew.', in receding the motion, agreed with the proposer's re • muks, and said the stipulation would be set out'in the agreement to be prepared. Mr Liardet thought the agreement very fair, Mr McDonald said this was not fiaal, as a s>h:>rfc Ac 1 ; would need to be passed to give effect to the agreement. : The motion was then put and carried. The Bjard rose.
