PUPIL TEACHERS' EXAMINATIONS

It the Educotion Board on Wednesday, Mr Faull, pursuant to notice, moved, That the resolution of Octobjr 22nd, 1902, regarding the examination of pupil teachers, be rescinded, and that in future the preparation of papers and the examination ba conducted by the Inspectors. Mr Mackay,in seconding the motion, pointed out that it was likely thore would be a thorough change in the pupil teachers' syllabus, The Inspector said he expected the new syllabus to have been issued three years ago.

Mr Taylor protested ag dost passing r.-sjlut ons and rescinding them. It was an objectionable practice, and he wou!d therefore opp \se the motion, Mr Wade was surprised that a proposal for an alteration in the system already adopted by the Board should be made so soon, and he considered th.t it should be givm a f iio trial. Thj Chairman strongly opposed the motion. He considered that if every Board adopted the course of using th« pximina ion papers prepared by the Depar- ment, it would tend to secure that uniformity throughout the colony which was much to be d-.sired. If this were done he was prepared to go the length of agreeing to the examination b?ing cmducted by the Board's Inspectors. The gre*t o 1 jct was to ensure equality of results. Moreover, it was a great mistake to be continually mak ing changes, and he would try his best to secure the adoption of the system he had mentioned.

Mr Faull, in rtply, agreed that there could be no harm in having the papers from the Government and the examination by the Inspectors, but it appeared that the main objection was that the candidates considered there was a difficulty in getting passes under a Government examination.

The motion was then put and on a division the ayes were: —Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Faull, M-ickay and Adlam; noes, Messrs Wade, McDonald, Taylor, and Alls worth, The Chairman gave his casting vote against the motion which was accordingly lost.
