LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTION.
r • ■ The elec' ion of members for the Taranaki Licensing Committee wan held on I Thursday and passed eff quietly throughout the district, A fair amount of interest was taken in the matter owing to the ques ion of 10 o'clock closing of hotel birs bei'g the point at issue so far as the five prohibitionis 1 - , candidal fis were concerned, but the | poll was only half that at the reII sent general election The arrangetjments at all the polling stations | were vsry complete and refl''ci grea f . I credit on the Returning Officer, Mr Arthur H. Holmes, whose courtesy I and business ability preeminently fit - him for the office It will be seen that t there was a good deal of cross voting • showing that a proportion of the elec- [ tore pinned their faith more on [ particular candidates for peisinal > reasons than as advocates of either c ticket. The result of the poll was declared by Mr Holmes about 9 15 p.m., and the crowd, which bad been waiting outfide the Tueatre Royal for an hour or two, raised a faint cheer, The counting was a somewhat long pr:oess, owing to the number of candidates acd the Cioss voting. It will be seen that the Rev. F, A, Bennett heads the poll, and that he has twu colleagues pledged to the 10 o'clock closing, while the te- , maining two elected members belong
to the moderate party. This leaves matters in an interesting coadition, as should the official chairman (the S.M.) cast his vote wi.h the mdtrates, matters will continue as at present.
