Teb number of men engaged on cooperative works in New Zealand at present is 4396. Of these 2386 (of . whom 260 are artisans and 2136 labourers) are employed by the Public Works Department, and 1910 labour- ~ ere are under the Roads Department. . The Public Works Department has k ' 113 artisans and workman engaged on J roada, defence works and public buildings. The Department of Roads has 1910 labourers employed on co-opprativH road work throughout the c un'ry. Southland - 63. ; Men are engaged on co-operative : raflway work at present as follows: Xawakawa 42, Grain mstown 14, Hel•ngville 83 (5 ariisans), Paeroa-Waihi 81 (6 artisans), Qisborne-Kiraki 52 (2 artisaus), North Island Main Trunk 955 (114 artisacs), Stratford-Whanga-f momona 33 (3 artisans), B'enheiraWaipara eou h end 171 (16 artisans), , Midland 179 (10 artisans), Rat-fton-Inangahua 38 (1 artism), Coal C-eek 87 (sarticane), Hokitika-Ross 109 (I artisan), Otago Central 325 (21 arti■ans); Oatlins Seaward Bush 56 (1 artisan), Orepuki-Waiau 29 (5 artisans), Heriot Extension 30 ; 250 ertisang, 2136 labourers; tot-il 2386.

During the month of Februaty 150 marriei and 499 singla men were assisted by the Labour Department. The cases were distributed as follows: ; —Auckland 188, Gisbarne and Sawka's | Bay 6, Taranaki 14, Wellington 'North 5, Wellington South 166, Nelson 3, Greymouth and Westland 78, North Cinterbury 136, South Canterbury 3, North Otago 14, Dunedin 26, Southland 10. Almost all of the applicants were labourers. Twenty-nine women were assisted by the women's branch of the department as well as tix who had | been previously assisted this year.
