INQUEST.

Saturday, 17th January, 1903.—Before Mr R, L, Stanford, S.M., Coxonir.

An ir quebt cone ruing the death of George Tuomas Ince, who died in the Hospital on Friday afternoon fiom injarii s received through the burning of his tent at Motuioa, on D cembe. lltb, was opened in tha Courthous*, a* 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, before Mr R, L, Stanford, Coroner, and the following jury :- W. A. Coil's (foreman), H.N. Gol.iwater, W. Ambmy, James Morey, O. Tuubridge, and E. F. Brictiiio.

The Coroner, when the jury was empannelled, stated that it was only intended to view tbe bady and take evidence of identification thit day, and he then proposed to adjourn the enquiry till next week.

The jary then adjourned to the morgue to view the body. Mr Kerr (Standish and Kerr), instruct?d by thn police, nppanred t,o conduce the inquiry; and Mr T, S: ton s)D,, and Weßtou), appeared to witch the •proc-edinga for Walcsr Smith, who is in custody 01 a charge connected wi'h the fie. Sergeant Haddrell wag a's) present.

On rdturoing from viewing the body the following evidence was taken: Constable Mcßue stated that at 2 a.m. on D cembtr 12 f e, he went out ta Moturoa en rcc.ipt of a telephone messigp, and wrnt to the foreshore where Ince bad bein liviag in a tent, lie found lace lying down and wrapped up in blankets, and he removed him to the hospital. After arrival at the hospital hj askid Ince questions as to the cause of the firs. Mr Weston asked if this w«s evidence. There was a reporter in Clour*, and evidence might be published that would prejudice his client in the public mind.

The Coroner thought it would be batter to cor fine the evidence to to-day to identification, Witnsss continued that he knew Ince before that date. The body he saw to-day was that of Ince, the nun he took to thi hospital on December 12fch.

The inquest was then adjourned til! 10 a.m. 011 Fridiy rexb.
