TEACHERS' SALARIES.
OIRCULAK TO EDUCATION BOARDS. In connection with the paragraph which appeared in yesterday's issue regarding no communication having been received as to whether payment of teachers 1 salaries would ba monthly or quarterly, , the Education Board during yesterday 'received the following circular from the department, wh : ch explains its'lf: — | To Secretaries of Education i Boards: As the returns required under " The Public School Teacbers Salaries Aot 1901" will not be available in time to enable the amounts payable to Education Boards for this month to be accurately ascertained each Board will receive on account of the month's services a payment of which the items are as follows: 1, A sum equivalent to the amount paid to the Board last month as capitation at the rate of £3 15s. 2, A sum equal to the average monthly rate paid to the Board during 1901 for additions to teachers salaries. 3, One-twelfth of the payments authorised bjr sub-section (b) of section 5 of the Act (£250 per annum together with lis 3d per annum per average attendance. In the computation of the latter the average attendance for the September quarter will be taken). The amount indicated will enable the Boards to pay teachers approximately the sums due to them for the month subject to adjustment when the exact turns are known. E. 0. Gibbs, Secretary. We understand, acting on this circular, the teachers charges will be made out and be available as usual subject to the adjustment indicated. It is satisfactory a'so to notice that monthly payments will continue. In some quarters it has baen st ited that quarterly payments would be introduced.
