OKATO.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) New Year's Day picnic.—This was held very successfully and is an annual event in conjunction with the Weslevan Church Anniversary. Mr. Humphreys with characteristic kindness lent his paddock, and a number of gentlemen and ladies were most diligent all day long in looking after the enjoyment of visitors.

Needless to say the provision tent was a prominent feature. The cricket match was another. It was between married and single, the latter proving victors. Every kind of round and lively game was joined in with much avidity. A large influx of friends from New Plymouth made their appearance about 1 p.m., and entered spiritedly inte the impromptu engagements of the day. Of course river and bush scenery found many admirers, and from north and south every kind of conveyance seemed requisitioned to bring visitors. A concert was held at night in the schoolroom and a two hours excellent and much enjoyed programme concluded the proceedings of the day. We were much indebted to the New Plymouth frieDds for the musical items with which they favoured us, while local contributors and other visitors merit also unstinted prais?. The monetary issue of the day wag such that Mr. Bughsoo, the treasurer, came forward with a bright countenance to give us a ehesrful and grateful report and to tell us that the trustees would be in a I position to meet all current claims. [Votes of thanks and the National Anthem precedod dispersion.
