BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council met on Monday. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Daekrill), Ors. Oonnett, Glow, Lealand, Brooking, Collis, Carter, Tisch, and Stahr. Leave of absence was granted to Or. Wi-bster. From the Department of Agriculture, stating that as the inspection of slaughtering places is now vested in the department, it advises the Council to cancel the appointment of any local inspector.—Mr Free's appointment was cancelled in accordance with this notice. From F. and E. Sole, asking the Council for a gujrantee of in any action brought agaiutt them for removing stone from the beach, as they cannot get stone unless they cross Reserve R., leased to Mr Webber by the School Commissioners.—Referred to Works Committee, with power to act. The Sanitary Inspector reported that since bis last report the sanitary condition of the town hid become more Satisfactory. Mrs Bullott's drain has been attended to and W. The Mayor referred to the action of the Chief Health Officer in refusing to allow Mr. Rock to run soapsuds from his laundry into the stream crossing Govei-street, as authorised by the Conncil. He submitted a draft of a letter of . protest agaicst the Chief Officer's derision, which was agreed to. Or, Tisch moved, in eccordance with notice given, that a qualified engineer be appointed to look after the public works of the borough, and act as Borough Surveyor, and Inspector of Buildings. —Seconded by Cr. Cirter, aud carried.
