OFFICES TO BE KEPT SEPARATE. The Mayor moved that applications be called for a Town Clerk, Seconded by Cr. Stohr. Cr. Brooking moved an amendment that the committee's second recommen-1 dation be put into effect, and referred to the advantages of combiuiug the offices of clerk and engineer. , Or. Oollis thought the commit'ee had gone outside their duties in bringing up the recommendations iu the] face of the notice of motion given bv ! Or. Tisch. J j Cr. Connett seconded the amend-' meut. The Mayor had stated that an j engineer was not required at present, I But he (Mr Connett) considered the p.oposal to'combine the offices was a! good one, and referred to the success of j the Wellington Harbour Board's business under an engineer, who was also clerk. .; Cr. Stohr considered there was l enough work to keep both a Town' i Clerk and an Engineer fully occupied.' I Cr Oollis obj octed to the appointment of any officer of the borough bjing : taken out of the Council's hands, as was proposed by allowing the Engineer to provide his own staff. Or Carter thought there would be no saving in the establishment of a com-1 bined officer and there would be enough work during the next two or three years for two men. i Ors Glow and L aland concurred. i The Mayor spoko against the amend- '■ merit, and Or Brooking replied. : The amentment was theu put and lost, and the Mayor's motion was' carried.
