The " people's day " at this popular gathering was on Thursday utterly mirred by the unpropitious weather. Shortly after noon the rain commence 1 ) to fall in a heavy downpour, and th'o attendance accordingly suffered very much. Up to mid-day people were coming into Hawera from all direction'', ud thera promised to be a teorJ attendance. Th« rain, however, cius- d thcue uearrr the town to s ay at home, and made things most uncomfortable for those who did attend, and interfered considerably with the show altogether.

But for tiiis the show would hovw been a record oa.', both in poini of attendance and the quali'y of the exhibits as a whole. In the horse classes there were some splendid entries, and the judges had no easy ta?k in selecting winners in many of the classes. The riding, driving, wood-chopping, and other were very succea>ful, aim some close contest* were witnessed.

Dr. Leatham, of New Plymouth, took first prizi in weight-carrying hacks and placed horses, with " Guardsman," against a fine field of entries. He was also aucce-sful in gutting h place in the harness classes with his fitly.
