VOLUNTEER NEWS.

NOTES BY "VEDETTE." Li utenant-Gokrael Newall, Officer C uimanding the district, inspected the local volunteers and Garrison Band on Monday night. There was an excellent muster of all companies, the Rifi s being under Lieutenant Cock and Hooker; Guirds under Lieutenant ! Holmes; Cadets under Captain DampI sey and Lieutenant Gray; and Garrison 1 Band under Bandmaster Haigh. Lieu-tenant-Colonel Ellis, Aoing-M'jor Okey, and Acting-Adjutant Taunton were also present. * The companies were marched to the Recreition Grounds, and exercised in various battaliou movements. Colonel Newall impressed his pleasure at the manner in which the work was carried out, and complimented the men on the smartness and efficiency shown.

At a meeting of the Rifles, held subsequently, it was decided to issue a challenge to the remainder of the battalion to fire a match, eight met a side, time and place to be arranged later.

A squad of the Central School Cadets, under Captain Dempsey, proceeded to the butts on Saturday last to compete for the prize offered to the boys by the New Zealand Clothing Company. The highest scores were: — Sergeant Skinner 67, Private Joseph 66, Corporal Nathan 65, Private Blanches 65, Private Black 62, Private Girling 59, Private Webster 55, Corporal Lung 48, Private Marfell 35. The Rfles received their pay on Monday night for the Royal visit trip. The Rifle Club te\m to fire in the triangular match agiinst Rifl.s and Guards on Thursday nuxt will be pick"d from the following:—W. Murton, J. Lovoridge, W, Dixon, A. Baker, W. Humphries, 0. Taylor, A. Marrett, J. Jones, G. Paul, F. Richards, G. Ram«on, R. Cock.
