CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A OESEBAr, meeting of the local Chamber of CVimmvi c<- v,\>h held last night, when there were present:—Mtssrs. W. L. Newman (president, in tbe chair), J. S. MeKelUr, A. E. A. Clarke, Chew OhODg, J. B. Counett, W.D. Webster.J |O. W. Govett, E. Dockrill, T. 8. Weston, M. Fiaser, W. J. Penn, J. 0. George, Newton King, W. J. Shaw, L. W. Alexander, R. 0. Hughes, T. Avery, R. Cock and W. Kerr.
The Chairman reported tbe result of the visit of the deputation to Wellington re the railway crossing. The Government made a point of shortness of moDey, and while recognising the danger of level crossings pointed out that the New Plymouth line would have to wait till its turn, as there were a number of other more urgent .works in the colony which had been strung up for some years.
Mr. Cock thought the te'ephone ser- ] vice should be opened on Sundays, and also suggested chat it should be avail-1 able from 6 a.m. on woek days, provided no extra cost is incurred. It was resolved that a sub-committee make inquiry into the matter. Complaints were alsi made about the attendance at the Telephone Exchange.
Mr. King moved that tbe Chamber should make an officii! complaint of the inattention of the telephone staff.— Seconded by Mr. Eraser, and carried. Mr. Hughes referred to the ques tion of baths, and the Post Office, and Mr. Dockrill briefly explained the position of matters at present. The meeting then adjourned.
