VOLUNTEER NEWS.
The Taranaki Guards paraded last night in the Drill Hall, under Captain Taunton and Lieutenant Holmes. There was a good muater, and the men were put through a good deal of useful work by the officers and non-coms. Two new members, Messrs. Revell and Dewar, were elected. Trained men were warned to attend for class-firing at the Frankley-road range on Thursday and Saturday nex*. The appointment of LieutenantColonel J Ellis, Y.D., to the command of No. 4 Battalion Wellington (Taranaki) Rifle Volunteers is gazette*). We heartily congratulate Colonel EHis on his appointment and the battalion on being commanded by such an experienced officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Watt, V.D , and Major Chicken, V.D., have been gazetted to the command of No. 2 and No. 3 Battalions respectively. ' . it was stated a few days ago that Colonel Penton was going to South Africa to take chargje of the Sixth Con • tingent, A Wellington Press wire states that Colonel Penton yesterday said he was not going to the front.
