A PECULIAR AFFAIR.

What looks very much liki an attempt -at poisoning Ins occurred at Whangareii Thomas Johnston being tbe viotim, Johnston found a small flask of whiskey at his bick door with the following note attached :—" With kind regards from a friend." Johnston drank a small quantity, which be found had a bitter tast«, and Boon afterwards he became so ill that he was unable to stand. Su-ipeoting poisin he dragged himself to his brother-in-law's residence, and a doctor was sent for. He used the stomach pump, and Johnstou was soon pronounced out of danger. The whiskey was found to contain a large quantity of strychnine in solution, and had Johnston taken a larger quantity the result would probably have proved fatal. The police are investigating the matter.
