HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The Board mot on Friday. Present: Messrs McDlarmid (chairman), Wilson. I Deckrill and Weston. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr. Roy. A latter was read from the Edncatiin Board desiring to arrange a coiiference between members of tint bfdy ar.d the Board of Governors in reference to the establishment of cooking chs-:es, etc. The Chairman stated what steps he had taken to obtain itformation in the matter, and laid details before the Board. It was decided that owing .to the expense that would be incurred the Boird was not in a. position to go into the matter alone, and it vvasro ; olved to meat a deputation from the Education Board to discuss tho questions of establishing cookery classes, etc. It was resolved to ask a gentleman in Wellington to act as outside examiner for the High Sahool, and if he is unabla to do so to write to the Registrar of the New Zealand University. The Chairman drew attention to tbe desirab'eness of still further increasing the number of pupi's to whom free tuition is given at the High School. j Members approved of this suggastisn, and it was decided to give effect to it at" a later date, Accounts were passed, and the meetadjourned, SPJEOIAf/ JIEBTING. Messrs McAllum, Allsworth, and Hignettj membe r s of tha Education Board, and, Mr. W. E. Spencer, M.A., Inspector of School?, attended to confer onrnatters mentioned in a latter previously received. The position in which the New Plymouth High School had been plac d with regard to pupils en'itled to free tuition at a District High School residing at the New Plymouth end of the district, by the Governmant's proposals to subsidise District High Schools as set forth in a circular from the Department of Education dated Bth January, was discussed at length, and Mr. Weston mevsd, that as this Board is anxious to afford the advantages of secondary education to all pupils of primary schools who are desirous of availing themselves, of them, this Board j >in with the Education Board in approiching the Government to allow it tbe same privileges as in the circu'ar of Bth January, 1901, dea'ing with District High Schools with reference to free tuition. Seconded by Mr. Roy, and carried. The Chairman and Mr. Roy were appointed a committee to confer with the Education Board oa tbo nuttar. Mr. McAllum referred to the manner in which the Education Board proposed to deal with a grant of received for instruction of primary school teachers in manual and technical work. He eaid it was proposed to expend half the amount in subsidising a suitable teacher, and he suggested the High School Board might assist by giving a suitible teach r further omploymeat. The Board decided to consider the matter further heforo giving areply. It was deeido4 to join with the Education Board in approaching the Borough Council to get a site on Poverty Flat for a Technical Sjhool. The,opinion was expressed that tho Borough Council would only eatectain this proposal in exchange for some 'other piece of land. Mr. McAllum thanked the members of the High Seliosl Boird for their cordial co-operation, and tho numbers of tho Education Board withdiew. The Secretary was icstruubed to watt* to the Secretary of the Girls' Fli(;b ScfcoD], Christeburclijand to Mr. Riloy, Director of the Technical School, Wellington, for information regarding classes for cookery instruction ; In regard to drawing d isms it was decidod to take uo further notion until the Board received a report from Mr. Sp'snccr on tho subject, and. tho Boird adjourned.
