The 'Frisco mail agent reports that until further notice the mail steamers will leave 'Frisco at 10 o'clock o« Thursday morning, instead of Wednesday evening. The reason given for the chaDge is that the steamers run too great a risk in leaviig 'Frisco at night. The date of arrival at Auckland has not been altered, but in future the steamers will probably arrive at Aackland on Monday afternoons, instead ef the morning. On the 3rd May the piston »f one of the low pressure cylinders broke, and the vessel has run with both engines compound since. The Postal D*pirtment state that the Yentma's trip has not beaten a'l previous records as claimed. Her steamug time was 429 heurs. whereas the >ierra has done the voyage in 411 hours. It is with much regret that we learn that Mr; W Wynn Kirkby yesterday passed away after a short illness at Wellington. For several yars he was connected with the Herald staff. Bnd was universally es'eemed. ' We join in the general expression of sympathy that will be felt fcr the members of the family in the sudden loss sustained. An immediate outcome of the visit to Eltham of Df. Valentine, District Health Officer' is the publication in the Gazette of an Order in Council, constituting the Eltham i drainage district. Prior to the departure of tha Ulstermore with the Sixth West Australian Contingent for South Africa, the police made a search for stowaways, and succeeded in unearthiDg , no less than sixty-eight. Tho verdict of the jury at tha inquiry was " That Edward Williams did set file to his place at Waikino.' 1 They also; added a rider to the effect that the action of j G. Maberley, agent for the Imperial Insurance Company, in accepting a fire risk without proper investigation, was reprehensible. The independent of the average colonial soldier in his operations in the Transvaal, as compared with the stolid rigidity of discipline - maintained by the Imperial " Tommy," has often been commented upon by correspondents. Generally, however, these comparisons have been in favour of the colonials. On Monday night a msmber of a local Volunteer corps, while on parade, took exception to the manner in which the sergeant in charge had given an order, which, through a misunderstanding, had resulted in something of a jumble in the ranks. To tho mind of the non-military observer, who generally has an excellent idea of the awful consequences to the private who has the temerity to question his -superior, officer's' word, this looked very like a caw for C.B. punishment. Tha unabashed private, how- j ever, continued his expostulations till seemingly out of breadth. He may learn later that this sort of independence is not the same that is praised in the colonial at the front; and It is quite on the cards that he will find the rules and regulations laiddiwn by ao unfeeling Defence Department will provide him with another-view of his fonduct. Further, he will no doubt find certain non-com. honours for which he was a candidate have vanished into the region of " mlght-bava-been." A settler in the Waimate district, has this season sent away some three tons of honey to the London market. At his spring count he had 75 hives, so the yisld represents an average of 901bs per hive. New Zealand honey commands good prices in the Loudon market, the last previous shipment having realised £42 10s per ton. The Bight Hon., the Premier, in applying to the toast of his health at Greymouth on Wednesday, took the opportunity of saying that the rumours about him occupying a Governorship, or going Home to contest a seat in the House of Commons, were idle talk. He intended remaining with the people of Kew Zealand,
A visit to Wanganui and Marton has just been made by Dr. Valentine, of the Health Department. At Wanganui he inspacted some old bouses, .to which the attention of the department had been called, and at Marton he inquired into the drainage and sanitary service of the town. Dr;\ Valentine found that some of,the residents bfjMarton were favourable to the carrying out of a proper drainnge system. The deer are evidently making their presence unpleasantly felt in the Maruia district, Inangahua County. A few days asjo three men were journeyiug- along in the -direction of Sandy Ross' wHen a huge (■tag and two deer suddenly emerged from the bush and .made straight towards them. The men ran, and so did the deer, the chase lasting for about ten minutes until the fleetfooted pursuers began to gain ground rapidly. Then the terrified travellers, no floubt considering that in this instance discretion was tbe better part of valour, made tracks for the nearest birch tree and tank refuge on the topmost branches. Fortunately, help soon came along in the shape of another wayfarer who was accompanied by a formid.\ble mastiff, at the sight of which the besiegers quickly abandoned their vantage ground at the foot of tho tree, clearing off into the bush with lightning speed. The men were thus rescued ( [rem their perilous position, and proceeded on their journey without further molestation.
