The Education Bwrd to-day discussed the question of unauthorised holidays being given by schoolmasters. The chairman said the question of holidays was -one that required looking into immediately. Some teachers oonseien? tiously carried on their schools right up to the verge of the holidays, while, others closed them a week before. Mr. Hogg, M.H.R., said it was. time, the Bmrd put its foot down on the present methods of closing schools oa most, frivolous pretexts, which were demoralising to scholars and repugnant to parents. It was eventually decided to. send a circular to committees aodj teachers informing them that schools must not be closed bo frequently and, drawing attention to the rail with, regard to reduction of salaries for unauthorised holidays. A request was received from Nelson' asking for co-operation in' the prowiat for the police to be employed as truant officers. The Board decided to reply that it had not found the appointment' of policemen ai truant inspectors a success. k ~.,:
