At the Mngistrate's Court to-day, Jobu Rosa w.is charged with having carried on the business of a betting man, in contravention of the city bylaws, in High-street. For the prosecution it was stated that no orert act could be proved agiinst the accused, but the cases quoted ehow that it wan sufficient if it could be proved that it was well-known he was a betting man, and that he had been seen apparently taking bets in a public place. Accused donied the charge, and said he had never even paid a bet in the streets of Gbristchurch. The Bench inflicted a fine of £2, with costs £1 Us. John Mandle was charged with a similar offence, but the case was adjourned till Friday.
