LIGHT RAILWAYS.

Speaking on the question of light line* it Stratford, Mr. Hall-Jones is reported by the Egmont Post aa follows:—" IV Government was going to construct a tramway into the country, and li? ha<! practically no doubt that it would begin it Stratford and work inward. Hi | thought the East Road would ba the route for 30 or 40 miles, with one o> two deviations where the grades rendered the road impracticable for a. tramway. The train so ruoning on the road line would ba available at almost any paint en the line, not at sat stations at on the railway, and he had no doub' that in the near future large producers would have switch lines into their own properties, and when they had quantities of anything to send away weuld notify the Department a day or so in advance, have the trncks sent down to their farms, and when they were loaded ' an engine would run down and fetch < them on to Stratford. He was mucb j interested in the question. This line was going in as an experiment, and it was going to be a success. He was going up the route himself with one of his most experienced surveyors in about a fortnight, and he had every hope of beginning work early in January nest, and he thought the settlers round about here would have no reason to complain of the Government road policy, but when they saw the result he had no doubt that the local bodies would be just as enthusiastic as he was, and they would see connecting tram lines down the district roads all along the line."
