A man named John Edward Bayley, aged 33, single, lost his life in the river this afternoon. He was mounted on a white horse, and rode down to the foreshore, near the town bridge, and was behaving in an eccentric manner, as though under the influence of liquor. He was observed to force his horse into the water, as though to swim the river, He apparently lost his seat, and, not being able to swim, could not regain the shore. The horse swam ashore some distance further down the stream. The man's body was recovered a couple of hours after. An inquest is to be held to-day.
