OFFER DECLINED. The Commander of the Forces, Colonel Pole-Penton, has notified Mr. E. M. Smith that the offer of a mounted rifle volunteer corps at Okato cannot be accepted. As no reason was given, Mr. Smith has written to the Commander drawing his attention to the fact that no grounds for the refusal were stated, and requesting an explanation, especially in view af the fact that when at New Plymouth the Premier had intimated both to Mr. Smith and His Worship the Mayor that every encouragement should be given towards raising troopß of mounted infantry—an arm of the forces that was greatly needed. Mr Smith has notified the refusal to the Rev. H. Mason, and informed him of the nature of the reply sent -to Colonel Pole-Penton. In the event of no satisfactory answer being received from the Defence Department, Mr. Smith will feel it his duty to bring the matter before the House.
