TOWN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

We cull the following extracts from the annual report of the Town School Committee, read on Monday last at the j meeting of householders: —

Thanks.—The Committee tender their very hearty thanks to the Yen. Archdeacon Govett for his generous gift of two handsome gold medals to the Central School, and also to His Worship the Mayor (Mr. E, Dockrill) for his valuable prize and for his kindly interest generally in school matters. A wholesome stimulus is given to pupils by the practical sympathy of persons who are not directly benefited by their work, and it is to be hoped that others may be found in the community who will follow the good example set them in this direction by the Archdeacon and His Worship. To the proprietors of the Daily News and the Taramki Herald the Committee also tender their sincere thanks for much valuable and gratuitous assistance, as also to the Recreation Grounds Board, whose kindly action ia granting to the Central School the use of the lake has tended to the success of the Swimming Club so ably conducted by the headmaster and teachers of the school, whose generous self-sacrifice in giving up so much of their time out of school hours to its personal supervision cannot be too highly commended.

Attendance.—The attendance of the town schools has suffered considerably during the year owing to an epidemic of measles and other disorders, which, unfortunately, has resulted in the reduction of the staff in each school by one pupil teacher. Several of the teachers also were laid up with measles, as many as three of the Central School staff being ill at the same time, but notwithstanding these great drawbacks the Inspector's examination report disclosed highly satisfactory results in both schools, which, in the circumstances, is especially gratifying to all concerned.

The Committee take this opportunity of reminding parents that the School Attendance Act is still in force and to express the hope that now the measles epidemic has run its course the attendance will become and remain steadier without the intervention of the Truwt Inspector.
