OPAKU RESERVE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION.
[ESTABLISHMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS. A joint committee of the Taranaki and Wanganui Education Boards have been conferring as to best means of utilising the revenue accruing from the Opaku University Reserve. There are at present 15 sections let, producing a rental of £29B—the amount of rent in hand being £2765. The arrangement arrived at and confirmed by the Taianaki Board on Wednesday provides for the establishment of scholarships on lines somewhat similar to those in connection with the Victoria University College. The scholurships are to be open to all children resident in the Taranaki Provincial District (part of which is under the Wanganui Education Boird), and tenable at any High School in that district and at the Victoria College. The details are to be settled by a joint committee. The arrangoment is one that is highly creditable to the representatives of the Taranaki Board (Messrs. Allswortb, Kennedy, and Mackay), and is likely to give considerable encouragement and impetus to secondary education in the district.
