CENTRAL SCHOOL SPORTS.
' The Central School lull their swimt ming sports in tho Recreation Grounds on Thursday. The attendance was good, in Rpite of the showery weather, and the Inglowood school children, together , with their friends, made up a very fair attendance. The youngsters displayed . their agility in the w-iter to adui'ring ' t friends wLh the usual splash and gus'o of school boys. Some of the itfiins ware first rate. One boy, a little fellow abut . 12 years of age, reached the length of . 39 yards in the long dive, and others in ( the swimming races showed consider- [ able ability. The "mudlarks" were L some school children who could not . swim,and they were allotted the shallow , end of the lake, where they had thair ! races, which consisted of short spurts toward given points, diving, and gouorally disporting themselves in the water. One boy managed to get out of his depth and swallowed more water than was good for him before ho was dragged back to safety, (The safety limit was marked by buoys.) Captain Hood and Mr. 0. Johnson acted as judges, and Messrs. Stohr and Gray as starters. The prizes were subsciibed for by the | schoolchildren themselves. Mr. Webber j kindly lent his boat, a courtesy that was much appreciated. It may be! mentioned that a spontaneous act of generosity on the part of a gentleman present benefitted the prize money to the extent of £l.
