TARANAKI RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.
Ths annual meeting cf the Taranaki Rifles was held on Thursday night, Captain Okey in the chair. About 40 members were present, Tbe accounts for the year were submitted and passed after discussion.
Tbe report stated that during the year two trophies (one presented by Mrs. Tabor-known as the "Simoan Trophy " —and one by Oolour-Sergeant Okey) were competed for. The Samoan trophy was won by Captain Okey, with Corporal MacDhrmid second. OolourSergeant Okey's trophy was won by Corporal MacDiarmid, with Private Armitage second. A triangular match was also fired against Stratford and Manaia, resulting iu a win for the Company's team by 65 points over Stratford and 113 points over Manaia, Captain Okey had received the Victorian decoration and Lieut. Cock the Imporial long service medal. The figure of merit for the volley and independent firing was much lower than last year owing to the increased length of range. The Company are exceedingly pleased at the advent of a new corps, and hope, that healthy rivahyfor efficiency will be of benefit to both corps. Six of the Company have gone for active service in South Africa, besides men from other corps who have been members and put in the greater portion of their service with this corps, A number of members have f.iiled to capitate, and have been asked to resign. The following prizes had been awarded : Cleanest arms and accoutrements, Corporal MacDiarmid, Ist prizo; Private Johns, 2ud. Attendance, Corporals Bolton and Harvey, Bugler Hopkins. Private E. Johns. AU made the possible number of attendances ; sergeants are aot eligible. I The following committees were| appointed: —Finance: Captain Oksy, Lieuts. Cock and Hooker, ColourSergeant Okey, and Scrgsant Lister. Shooting: Oolour-Sergpant Okey, Sergeant Lister, Corporals MacDiarmid and Harvey, and Private Butler, The annual ball for the Drill Hall fund will be held on the 24th May. Trophies were donated by Captain Okey, Chaplain Evans, C..pt. Taunton, and Corp. Murton (who is leaving for England) and Mr. MacDiarmid. Letters of thanks \vi 1 be sen', to oho donors.
It was resolved that a Tetter be sent ■to Corp. Mutton regretting the ; enessity of his resignation. Resolved—" Th :t lines as laid down by regulation be indicted." A noncom, was appointed to collect the same.
A number of honor ay members have joined the Company. Mr. Samuel was elected a life member, and Captain Webster, Lieut. o,imck, Drs. Walker and Leaf-am, Messrs. Roy, Dookrill, J. C. George, P. P. Corkill, W. P. Brooking, A. Lealand, JST. K. MacDiarmid, N. King, and W. H. Skinner annual members.
