SAWMILL DESTROYED

Damage Estimated At £5OOO Press Association —Copyright. Taumarunui, June 17. Originating from an outbreak in file engine room, fire destroyed a sawmill owned by Manson and Clark at Malison’s Siding, a few miles north of Raurimu, in the early hours of this morning. Employees, who were roused shortly before four o’clock in an effort ito quell the f.Lmes, were' able to save stacks of timber, but the mill buildings and equipmer.b were demolished. All the buildings were demolished. The fire continued to rage -throughout the day and this evening only j the skeleton of a boiler and its brick ' casing were standing in a. mass of smouldering debris. The opinion was expressed that the mill could not be replaced/ for less than £5OOO. At lordinl’-ry times ithe mill employed from 25. t° 30' hands., almost all of whom are now 'temporarily out of work. With an output of about 7000 feet of timber each day, the plant was of the moslj modern type. The head office of the mill is Ist Napier, but the proprietor, Mr Charles Manson, has resided at the mill at Raurimu for 20 years.
