TROLLEY BUSES

USE IN AUCKLAND Development Likely Auckland, June 16. Preliminary niave taken place, it is understood, between the Auckland Transport Board and the proprietors of the “K” buses, L. J. Keys, Did., which serve St. Helier’s and Kohimarama, with the object of the board considering the advikaOili’y or otherwise of taking over the service. It is even suggested ithai members of the board are visualising the possibility of serving the suburbs dotted along Tamaki Drive—Orak4i, Mission Bay, Kohimarama tand St. Helier’s—with trolley buses of the (two-decker type. This, however, must be a development of the future, >as the buses at present in use are of -the most modern type, and it would be difficult for the board to divert them To some other rouite to make way for trolley buses. In the event of The board proceeding with the scheme, there is a possibility, of course, of some of (the present buses being used to inaugurate a feeder bus service to Orakei, which is in course of further development under the Government’s housing scheme.

It was confessed by the chairman of the Transport Board, Hon. H. 6. R. Mason, this wes, that, with public opinion directed towards team-

way services in overseas cities being converted to elec.tric trolley buses, the trend of events had at no time escaped the attention of the board. He also mentioned that the topography of Auckland was very different from, citi^t---overseas where conversions had recently been ntade. In Auckland!, for instance 'there were steep gradients in almost every direction, and it was questionable whether the people would readily patronise the Hop decks of trolley buses when travelling over these gra<des. Mr Mason did not refer in any way to the drive round the waterfront, but here, it must be realised, is a fiat stretch of several miles which is admirably suited for experimentation with trolley buses.
