A lively exchange occurred at a meeting of the Textfile Committee between Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, New Zealand, and the chairman; Mr Scholes, representing British employers. The latte r stated that New Zealand’s textile industry was so small that the lessons in the application of a forty-hour week were useless. Mr Armstrong replied that New Zealand was a; small country i:nd had lots to learn, but not from British textile manufactur-e-rs. “Our textile employers are more prosperous than -ever,” he stated. “If British employers, with all their experience, cannot make a forty-hour week pay, they should go to New Zealand to learn their business.”
