ELECTRIC POWER PROFIT

(To .the Editor). Sir,—l was unfortunately unable to attend the meeting called by our worthy Mayor on Monday night la£t, ’ but I have closely studied the reports I ,)f the meeting. i It appears to me that the majority iof those present were there for the 'purpose of getting what advantage ! they could for themselves. No thought 1 was given for th? welfare of the town 1 Itself. j Your paper, Sir, is an advocate for ja “Better, Brighter Stratford.” 1 think the scheme I would suggest would appeal to you. I do not (approve of the profit from electric power being paid into the rating account, and I think that jus-t at present iit would be a mistake to reduce the cost of power and light Io the consumer. We have paid on the present rate right ithrough the times when most of us were more or less hard pressed for money, and I think, now thut tim s have brightened a bi* , that we can go on paying for a little longer. Now, Sir, would it not be a sound idea to put this profit inito a separate account for the improvement of the borough. One is ashamed to ti ke a visitor off Broadway. Curbing and • Coot pa(h fork hav? been neglfd.ed ■ long enough. The re.'.ds are in a fear- | Cui state. There are several raids in need of formation and Liling work. A grea4 deal of the necessary work calls for labour only, ‘and what better way is there, in these times of spending money, ‘than in providing work Let the council employ anothei eight or ten men at standard rates o' pay to clear up and generally im prove the borough. When thait has been done the cosit of maintenance ir the borough Will be lessened. Then reduce the cost of dec ricity, if you like. I am sure, Sir, thait the consumer who has the interest of the town at heart will no-t mind paying under these “circumstances, and it'hose wh” 'lave not that interest.—w 11, it doesn’t matter much about them, does it?—l am, etc., J. B. MAIN. D ratford, April 28, 1937.
