INFANTILE PARALYSIS

ONE NEW CASE IN HAWERA. Position of Schools in Stratford District. Another case of infantile paralysis at Hawera was reported to-day, a ten-year-old girl being admitted to the hospital. In reply to an inquiry made by the “Central Press” this afternoon, Dr. F. W. W. Dawson, Medical Officer of Health, said no instructions had been given to close schools in the Stratford district. The six-year-old girl from Finnerty Road, Ngaere, who was admitted to the Stratford Hospital yesterday suffering from mild paralysis of the left t-high, was doing well, Dr. Dawson said. Although unwell for the past two weeks, the girl attended Ngaere School as usual, but yesterday morning she was unable to use her leg, and Dr. Saunders ordered her removal to the Stratford Hospital. She is the only member of her family of school age. After investigations yesterday afternoon by Dr. F. W. W. Dawson, instructions were issued by the Health Department to close the Ngaere School. Acting under instructions from the Health Department, the Stratford County Council has requested all Ngaere district residents to avoid contact with residents from other areas. Children in the district under the age of 16 will not be allowed to attend theatres or public gatherings. CASES ELSEWHERE. A boy aged nine years was diagnosed at Palmerston North as a positive case of paralysis. As a result the Terrace End school is closed. There are now 10 cases in the district. *A girl aged eight, whose parents live at Matawai, has been admitted to Cok Hospital, Gisborne, as a mild case of infantile paralysis.
