ATHLETIC GIRLS. Fun and Fashion at School Sports. In these athletij days when girls step on to the convincing grounds in shorts like their boy friends, there is no nnestion of the enthusiasm with which they enter into the sport, writes' “Sunbeam.” Much more definite in degree in the joy of it. expressed by them ’■compared to the males. This female trait was unmistakably in evidence at the Technical High School sports on Tuesday. The joy germ, awoke at the sight of one girt’s shorts—a dream in red, it would appear, judging by the delight with which they were received by the wearer’s pals. “Oh! Aren’t the/ lovely! Gosh! How stunning:” were two only qf ( -the gushing comments. There were many othe.r colours in shorts on tfle ground, but the wearer of the red was a winner and a popular competitor throughout the happy day. Feminine shrieks of happiness rose from competitors and youthful onlookers wherever and whenever the. fight for supremacy was sternest or the fortunes of war Sometimes unexpectedly spoilt the chances of a. favourites The champion’s ? success and the “also slarted's” failure to . make a reasonable display were alike productive .of applause, or laughter. In their own competitions, especially, it .did not matter whether the event was the hop, step and jump, catch-the-train, sack race, apple bobbing, or the three-legged race, the girls bubbled over with the joy of their experiences. It was the children’s day, and nothing arose to mar the pleasures of it. It closed, as it began, in glorious sunshine and with a veritable paean Of joy and triumph as the victors were crowned with their laurels.
