In unanimous resolutions adopted at a. meeting of the New Zealand Railway Tradesmen’s Association and all Skilled Trades Union to day the | opinion was . erpressed that the allegj ed shortage of trade omen was not as ’ acute as the public was-, being advisI ed, and that the. me'ting Would do its i utmost io nr serve tire rights of tradesmen to reguin the sole right of performing all work recognised a« part of their trades. The meeting’s opinion was that the full requirements ccnld be met satisfactorily if the employers co-operated with the unions in, fulfilling the programme of work. It was considered that if sutficienr. inducement were offered respecting rates of pay and conI tinuity of employment many trades- | men who were forced through unfavourable circumstances into other | avenues of employment would un- ; hesitatingly return to their trades. I The meeting further resolved that i after every possible effort had been ! made to obtain, the require.], number of tradesmen and after sufiic-ent inducement had been given all .artisans to again take up work at their trades and it is then found the requirements had? not. been met, we are prepared to consider the training of suitable young men who have had some rradning at technical schools under an apprenticeship system approved by the 'trades union.”
